In this article we will explain how to link a card reader RFID with our system of  Vera domotics.

In this way we can associate any scene with a unique key or card, whether to deactivate an alarm, start a pc…

In this project we use the Vera driver but it is extensible to almost any Z-Wave controller, all that changed a bit is the way to associate the universal sensor with the Z-Wave controller.

At the end as bonus we are going to integrate the RFID reader in a key of light so that it is completely hidden.

The necessary elements for this project are:

I have chosen this RFID reader for its simplicity and price. Any other reader that recognizing an associated key closes a circuit, worth.

Then we will describe the steps necessary to perform the entire project can be summarized in:

  1. Vera 3-binary sensor link
  2. Configuring sensors
  3. Set a key in the RFID reader
  4. Union between the universal sensor and RFID reader
  5. Integration of RFID in light key reader

The order of these steps is not compulsory but if highly recommended:

For example to set a key in the RFID reader before placing her hand, it assures us that if it fails it has not been our fault. If we carved it before attaching the wrench and then fails, we would not know if we have been us to open it.

Vera 3-binary sensor link

Before anything you have to feed the sensor bianrio, entry is variable, it can be powered by DC from 9V to 30V. This gives us a lot of flexibility, we can use from a battery of 9V to a transformer.

In this project we use AC 220V to 12V DC transformer that also will help us to feed the reader RFDIF

The wiring of the sensor is quite simple, try to use both as a descriptive technical nomenclature by colors, which I hope that wires coming out of the sensor does not change color of a sensor to another, so I show the distribution of mine.

Binary sensor

Power supply (+) is connected to the red cable (P) and the (-) blue (GND)

Once powered sensor proceed to bind it by performing the following steps:

1. Launch mode link in vera 3, either by software on the web portal or by button on router.

2. Press 3 times quickly the button of the Fibaro.

Add Z-Wave devices

Vera recognizes 3 devices. One general and two sons who are the two input channels.


Default input channels are configured to give the rest as closed-circuit signal.

3. To know what the parent device and input channels are going to the properties of the devices.

(Generally, which has one more letter a number are the channels).

4. To know which channel corresponds to each window in the web portal, shoot one of the two channels closed circuit that channel.

Joining in the universal sensor wires (GND) blue and yellow (IN1) for channel 1 and joining the blue (GND) and green (IN2) for channel 2.

For our purpose it is best to configure them as circuits open at rest and closed when they are fired.

Sensor configuration

To configure the fibaro motion sensors must perform the following steps.

1. Enter in the configuration of the parent – > devices options

2. Add variable

  • variable 3 1 byte value 0 dec
  • variable 4 1 byte value 0 dec

3. Close window,

4. Save and give a couple of times to the plate of the sensor button to get it out of sleep mode

5. So cool on the website, fire sensors

Set a key in the RFID reader

Before putting a hand to the reader, we will first set up a key so that it is recognized by the reader.

For which follow the steps provided in the instructions for the reader, make sure you have a key configured correctly before continuing.

In our case to the RFID reader associated key, a green led will light and sound characteristic beep.

If we passed a key that is not associated with we can see that a red light and sound different from the previous one beep.

Union between the universal sensor and RFID reader

Once bound the universal sensor Fibaro and Vera router, we need to connect the RFID reader with universal sensor.

The RFID reader is behind three connectors, we are going to use the large one, the one on the left.


The contacts that we use are the (COM), the (NO), the (+ 12V) and the (GND)

The circuit of contacts (COM) and (NO) are the ones who the reader close to recognize an associated key, with which these are those who will use to shoot our sensor.

The outline of the necessary connections between the RFID reader, the binary sensor and power supply are as follows:

To facilitate us splice the wires we use a connector.

Once made and checked the electrical connections, proceed to connect the power supply to the electrical network 220V.

We list here the key associated ahead of the RFID reader and we would have to see the Green led, hear the beep of associated key and most importantly, on the website of Vera can see how the sensor is triggered.

We can now create a scene and throw it with the key of the RFID reader!

Integration of the RFID reader in light key

In this section we are going to integrate the reader in a key of light so in this way the reader is completely concealed and simply passing the key ahead of the key of light we can shoot our scene.

What are going to do is disassemble the RFDIF reader and remove the antenna that has to read the keys.

But first of all, disconnect the power supply and of the universal sensor RFID reader.

This reader an anti tamper system, is a switch on the inside of RDID reader that detects if the back of the same have been removed.

Temporarily I will bypass to work and do the necessary tests.

We alargaremos the aerial cables unsolder the connection between the antenna and the plate of the RFID reader and welding between Middle cables not too long because we can lose reception antenna how long can be these wires? I’ve used 50 cm and it works for me. I have not tried to seek the maximum.

Case also bear in mind the polarity of the antenna when desoldering and welding wires

Place the antenna on the inside of the frame of the light key, so in my case I had to adapt the framework to the antenna, important, not adapting the antenna to the framework, because if you deformáis it you can lose reception and will not operate the RFID reader

I’ve created a slash by the inside of the frame of the light key to fit without deforming the RFID reader antenna

In my case the wrench light is on a wall with a wardrobe. I have placed the reader inside the Cabinet, making a hole on the inside light key box and the inside of the Cabinet with the key of the light box.

This drill I passed the antenna cable.

And in this way the entire system hidden.
