We heard of “yetu” because, even though it is a german company, there are spanish developers involved in the project that contacted us because they needed Z-Wave equipment.

We took advantage of our visit to IFA 2014 to visit their stand and get to know more about this new platform.

This solution actually dates from last year. It’s mainly focused on monitoring energy consumption. However, they want to go further. They integrate with the smart home, so that connected devices and services can be used from any device (PC and smartphone) and from the TV.

Their objective is to provide an open portal using open source technologies that are available to all, so that developers can create applications.

At the hardware level the main hub is very complete. It contains the following:

  • ARM-A9 Cortex® dual-core processor
  • 1 GB SDRAM
  • 1 GB FLASH
  • 802.11n WLAN
  • Z-Wave
  • ZigBee
  • Bluetooth
  • Ethernet 10/100 Mbit / s
  • HDMI Full HD
  • 1 external USB port
  • 3 internal USB
  • Micro SD
  • Serial port
  • GPIO
  • Multicolor LED
  • External power supply, 12V, 2A
  • Embedded Linux OS

This is contained in a 175mm x 175mm x 42mm box. The internal USB ports allow for plugging in dongles to support other technologies as needed, for example, EnOcean. The box is designed to be highly scalable down to the hardware level. For starters it supports Z-Wave (such as Fibaro), ZigBee (such as Philips HUE), Bluetooth, and, of course, IP devices, such as webcams or the Netatmo weather station.

Thanks to its HTMI output, it can be connected to the TV. This allows it, aside from playing our favorite content, to notify us in real time of any events.

Any use is possible, the platform is completely open to developers. The company’s objective is to develop a few base applications and leave the platform open to developers as well as finding partners to add service packages, such as the recently-closed partnership with Deutsche Telekom.

The following video shows what they showed us and demonstrated.
